Product Development: Prototype Hardware

Prototype hardware is designed to be debuggable. As such it will often be larger than the final form factor, allowing room for more debugging interfaces and for signals to be brought out to test points. It is often referred to as “Non-Form Fit” because of this.

All electronic designs are done using the industry leading software Altium Designer.

The final physical form factor for the hardware will be agreed with the client. Consideration will be given, in conjunction with our client, to aesthetics, manufacturability, cooling, waterproofing, connectors and user interaction. In some cases this form factor will be revised later if the project has specific constraints that cannot be established yet such as tight physical size constraints or thermal requirements.

Prototypes are usually manufactured on a rapid turnaround basis in low volumes (typically around ten units). These units are not intended for sale and are instead to validate the design, develop software, and to verify compatibility with other systems.

We make extensive use of in-house 3D printing to prototype mechanical aspects, enclosures, safety covers etc. as required.
